Therapy. Consulting. Community.
About
We live in a world that asks us to constantly perform, produce, and progress. But beneath every achievement, every institution, and every community are people searching for meaning, connection, and a sense of belonging. The Practice of Living exists to explore what allows people and communities to truly thrive. We believe wellbeing is not created in isolation; it is shaped by the relationships we build, the environments we create, and the ways we choose to show up for one another.Through therapy, group experiences, and consulting, we partner with individuals, communities, and organizations to better understand what shapes human experience and create pathways for intentional growth.
Our work is grounded in the belief that transformation begins with curiosity. By examining the narratives, relationships, and systems that influence how we live and work, we can create spaces that are more connected, thoughtful, and human.
Because living well is not a destination. It is an ongoing practice.

Crystal McDougle, LICSW
I’m Crystal McDougle, a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and founder of The Practice of Living, a Washington, DC-based mental health practice offering therapy, group experiences, and consulting for individuals, communities, and organizations.
My clinical approach is shaped by years spent navigating high-performance environments as a Division I athlete, entrepreneur, and community practitioner. These experiences informed my understanding that achievement, productivity, and success often exist alongside deeper questions of identity, purpose, connection, and belonging.
Through my work, I support individuals navigating life transitions, trauma, burnout, identity exploration, and personal growth. My approach is rooted in integrative therapy, which draws from multiple therapeutic frameworks and adapts to each client’s unique experiences, needs, and goals. This may include narrative therapy, mindfulness, expressive approaches, and relational practices to help clients better understand themselves and create meaningful change.
Alongside my clinical practice, I am pursuing a PhD in Social Work, exploring the relationship between creativity, community, and collective wellbeing. My research and practice are connected by a shared interest in understanding how people heal, grow, and create meaningful lives within the contexts they inhabit.
Outside of my work, I find inspiration through running, travel, dance, writing, and the everyday rituals that make life feel meaningful.
